PROCAST’S striking refurbishment of local authority homes in Blackstoun Oval, Paisley, has been recognised with two awards.
The company were named Environmental/Energy Conservation winners and were Highly Commended in the Refurbishment – Insulation/Render Finish category of the annual Insulated Render and Cladding Association (INCA) awards.
The upgrades to the near 100-year-old maisonette properties for Renfrewshire Council were needed as a result of decades of weathering, pollution and the presence of algae – all of which contributed to a deterioration in residents’ living standards and posed a risk to health.
The local authority relied on Procast to deliver their “Whole House Approach” to improving the lives of the people living in Blackstoun Oval by carrying out an “exceptionally deep” retrofit and turning the homes into residences fit for the future.
The thermal efficiency of the buildings was extremely poor, and it was clear from their condition that significant refurbishment was required in line with PAS2030:2019 standards.
BBA-approved external wall insulation manufactured by Structherm was fitted to the 36 properties involved in the upgrade, together with roof extensions, insulation below the damp proof course, the fitting of solar photovoltaic panels to the roofs, new windows and doors and modifications to external surface-mounted services to prevent insulation gaps.
Procast’s Barry Chisholm said: “This project presented a number of challenges, all exacerbated by COVID-19 and trying to adapt our working practices to PAS 2035.
“Structherm’s unparalleled technical and commercial support from building warrant stage through to completion ensured that Procast were able to deliver Renfrewshire Council’s vision.”
Duncan Smith, of Renfrewshire Council, said: “This project shows that a holistic approach to energy efficiency and asset management can produce a really positive outcome and look almost as good as new.
“The project is one that we are incredibly proud of, both from an asset and energy perspective.
“These homes are a statement of how work can come together under PAS 2035 standards, providing a long-lasting refurbishment designed to benefit the lives of residents for decades to come.
“Blackstoun Oval showcases exemplary work towards a greener future in which clean energy and energy efficiency measures can be installed in a single project.”
