The Project

The Lanimer Shed project represents a significant construction initiative commissioned by South Lanarkshire Council, with a contract value of £700,000. Originally scheduled as a 26-week programme, the project extended to 30 weeks while remaining within budget. The scope of works included foundations, groundworks including drainage, floor slab installation, steel frame erection, cladding, hard landscaping, and mechanical and electrical services.

The Approach

The construction featured a steel portal frame design with insulated cladding panels, ensuring durability and energy efficiency. A key technical innovation was the Klargester waste tank and reed bed system, optimising drainage solutions. The foundations were established using a driven piling solution, enhancing structural integrity.

The project was managed by a full-time Site Manager, supported by a part-time Quantity Surveyor and Contracts Manager. Six specialist subcontractors contributed to the works, with an average of ten personnel on-site during peak operations. This staffing strategy enabled efficient coordination and project delivery.

Environmental responsibility played a central role in the project. The installation of an eco-friendly reed bed system, alongside comprehensive waste management practices including skip monitoring, waste segregation, and soil reuse strategies, demonstrated a commitment to sustainability. Additionally, safety remained a priority, with continuous monitoring of air quality, noise, and vibration levels, as well as work stoppage protocols to minimize disruption to the neighbouring riding centre.

Community engagement was a key focus, delivering local employment opportunities, including the engagement of a local security services provider. The project also established a trainee manager position, supporting professional development through SMSTS and First Aid certification programmes. Collaboration with the riding centre was particularly successful, including a financial contribution to support beginner riding sessions for local children.

The Outcome

Strong client engagement was maintained throughout the project, with regular site meetings and an open-door policy for progress checks, ensuring swift issue resolution. The client’s local residency further facilitated enhanced engagement and rapid decision-making.

Despite a programme extension of four weeks, the project remained within budget, achieving high client satisfaction. The final structure successfully integrates into its surroundings, and the environmental management systems have proved effective.

A key lesson learned was the impact of site location on construction efficiency. While the completed building fits well within its context, an alternative site with improved accessibility could have enhanced logistical efficiency during construction.

The Lanimer Shed project demonstrates the successful delivery of a complex construction scheme, maintaining strong community relations, environmental responsibility, and budgetary control, contributing positively to South Lanarkshire’s public infrastructure.
